With the help of our ADS-C Common Service, we are excited to announce the successful completion of the HERON demonstration for ADS-C/EPP (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Contract/Extended Projected Profile) integration into ATC systems. This marks a significant milestone in the advancement of digital and technology-driven European airspace.

What is the HERON Project?
Climate change is having a profound impact on all sectors, and air travel is a major contributor to global warming. The HERON project (Highly Efficient Green Operations) aims to reduce CO2 emissions in air transport by implementing long-term sustainable solutions, both in the air and on the ground.
Key Objectives of the HERON Project:
✔ Integrated 4D for Green Trajectories
✔ Green Surface Operations Management
✔ Optimised Approaches
✔ Improved Trajectory Planning
✔ ADS-C Common Service Integration
ADS-C/EPP to Ground ATC Trial
A critical milestone of the HERON project was the successful ADS-C/EPP integration trial, conducted at ENAV ACC premises in Rome. This collaboration between ENAV, Leonardo, and Deep Blue aimed to evaluate the benefits of integrating ADS-C/EPP data into ground-based ATC (Air Traffic Control) systems.
The trial, performed in Shadow Mode with live air traffic throughout February, provided valuable insights into the operational benefits of ADS-C/EPP data integration.
Key Achievements of the ADS-C/EPP Trial:
✅ Enhanced Initial Descent Phase – Utilising ADS-C EPP (Extended Projected Profile) and Top of Descent (ToD) data to improve predictability, safety, and environmental impact.
✅ Operational Efficiency – Demonstrating improved operational procedures, optimised flight paths, and reduced fuel consumption, contributing to a more sustainable airspace.
Airtel ATN’s Contribution to the HERON Demonstration
Building on the progress made in SESAR 2020 PJ.31 DIGITS and PJ.38 ADSCENSIO, Airtel ATN played a key role in Work Package 2.5 (WP2.5) to ensure Extended Projected Profile (EPP) data is effectively shared with ATSUs and NM during operational tests. This supports the wider adoption of Trajectory-Based Operations (TBO).
Our ADS-C Common Service was integral to ensuring seamless platform integration. We developed and operated the service, ensuring its integration into the ground system via a SWIM-based Client, developed in line with Leonardo specifications.
Advancing Air Traffic Management Through Innovation
Our expertise in ADS-C technology and ATC system integration underscores our commitment to innovation and sustainable aviation. This HERON trial represents a major step forward in:
✔ Enhancing airspace management
✔ Improving flight safety
✔ Promoting environmental sustainability
At Airtel ATN, we remain committed to driving technological advancements that support a greener, safer, and more efficient air traffic management system.
