Airtel to provide software for FAA NextGen System

Airtel ATN has received a contract to provide its software for the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) NextGen Air Transportation System (ATS) programme.

The Irish data communications company will provide data link software, avionics test equipment and development services to several US-based companies and research organisations for the development of the programme.

The NextGen ATS aims to overhaul the US airspace system to make air travel more convenient, safe and dependable.

If successful it will enable the FAA to track and guide aircraft more precisely and efficiently, decrease fuel consumption, reduce noise and pollution, prevent lengthy flight delays and eliminate accidents.

Airtel ATN has estimated that the contracts will generate nearly $1m in revenue for the company in 2010.
